Ivory Coast ambassador says Ouattara may soon lift cocoa export ban
NEW YORK — The U.N. envoy to Ivory Coast leader Alassane Ouattara says that the winner of last year’s presidential elections is expected within days to lift the ban on the nation’s critical cocoa exports.
Ouattara, recognized by the U.N. and many countries as Ivory Coast’s legitimate leader, called for an export ban on cocoa in mid-January in an effort to force his rival Laurent Gbagbo to step down. Ivory Coast is among the world’s leading cocoa producers, and the ban and violence in the country have affected world prices for the commodity.
Ambassador Youssoufou Bamba told reporters Thursday the cocoa sector should quickly return to normal.
